Termites are a small pest found in Australia that can cause substantial structural damage in homes. They can often go unnoticed and its not until the damage becomes extensive that you realise, they have taken up residence in your home with you. However, knowing the signs to identify the damage early on can help save you money and stop them from causing further structural problems.
Common Signs of Termite Damage:
- Tunnels and Mud Tubes: It is a good idea to check around the exterior of your house for small holes. These holes could be entrances into the termite’s subterranean tunnels. Also look for termite tunnels made of mud; these are used to travel from their nests to their food sources. These can be found on wooden structures, walls or in the subfloor area under your home and around foundations.
- Hollow Wood: You can check your wooden surfaces around the house by tapping on them. If they sound hollow when it shouldn’t be, it could be a sign that termites have eaten out the inside.
- Termite Swarms and discarded wings: You may notice Termite Alates swarming during the spring and autumn months or find discarded wings around the windows or doors. If you notice this around your home it could be a sign that there are termites in the area and a full check is required.
- Damaged Wood: Termites like to eat the interior section of wooden structures. They have a distinctive pattern of damage and leave only the thin outside shell.
- Damaged Paint: You may notice the paint on the walls or ceiling starting to peel or blister, this can be a sign of damage hidden underneath.
Preventing Termite Damage:
- Regular Inspections: You should have regular inspections around out around your house. Termites like areas that are prone to moisture. These areas include sub floor space, bathrooms, laundry and other crawl spaces.
- Ventilation: By making sure the house is well ventilated you are able to reduce excess moisture areas which can attract termites.
- Remove wood in contact with the ground: Wooden structures such as decking, patios, cubby houses should not have direct contact with the ground. By having these touching the soil it gives termites hidden access points into the building.
- Professional Treatment: If you think you may have a termite infestation you should contact a professional to have a full termite inspection carried out and to provide advice on various treatment options.
If you are aware of the signs of termite damage and take the appropriate measures you can protect your home from termite attack. Early detection is key and preventative treatments can save you time and money.
