In Australia we are home to a wide variety of insects, unfortunately some these can be harmful to humans. This is especially true for children, who are more susceptible to insect bites and stings. If you have a pool, use these 5 tips to help protect your kids from insect bites in pools.
Try these tips to help keep your kids safe:
- Regular Cleaning – By keeping your pool clean and well-maintained. This will help to reduce the number of insects that are attracted to your pool. This includes skimming the pool regular to remove leaves etc, brush and vacuum regularly to remove any algae that might be starting to grow.
- Cover the Pool – Use a pool cover. Pool covers can help stop insects from laying their eggs in your pool water and can also help maintain pool temperatures which can make it less attractive to insects.
- Fence the Pool. A pool fence will help to keep young children from accidentally falling into the pool. Depending on the type of fencing it can also deter insects from entering the pool area.
- Use insect repellent on your kids. By applying insect repellent before swimming, you can reduce the risk of bites however it is important to pick a repellent that is safe for kids to use.
- Learn about insects. Teach your kids about the different types of insects that can be found in your area and how to identify them. This also includes what to do if they are stung or bitten.
Here are some additional tips that may help:
- Learn about the types of insects that are found in your area. Some of the more commonly found insects in Australian pools can include, spiders, mosquitoes, water bugs and leeches.
- Be extra vigilant in the summer months. As insects are more active when its warmer it is important to always be on the look out to make sure your kids stay safe.
- Check your kids for insect bites and stings regularly. If you notice any insect bites or stings on your kids, be sure to clean them and apply antiseptic cream.
- If your child is bitten or stung by an insect, seek medical attention if necessary. Some insect bites and stings can be serious, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and seek medical attention if you’re not sure how to treat the bite or sting.
