Throughout our many years of pest control we have heard some myths, crazy ideas, tricks and DIY treatments. Some have been old wives tales passed down by generations, some are from suspect marketing and others have be told over and over that everyone just assumes they’re true.

Here are a few myths we decided that needed to be BUSTED!

MYTH #1 Harsh Chemicals are the Only Ways to Treat Pests Around the House.

Many years ago, this was the case. Today however, with modern chemical development, scientists at the leading chemical companies have created a range of products that are eco-friendly and safe for your family and pets while still achieving super effective results.

MYTH #2 Mosquitoes are Only Around During Mornings and Evenings.

It would be safe to assume that most people who believe this are from cities as those out here in the bush know that it doesn’t matter what time of day it is. A mosquito will still hunger for your sweet blood at any time. Even though repellent can be a temporary deterrent it is important to consider all options when it comes to keeping the mosquitoes away.

MYTH #3 A House on a Concrete Slab is Protected from Termites.

This would be true if there was no movements in the slabs! Movement is extremely common causing cracks and if the termites can travel up any penetrations such as plumbing and electrical pipes or simply up the edge of the slab into the wooden internals. Another common thing we have people say is they’re house is safe because it’s steel frame. All this just means is that they willeat into the gyprock, kitchen cupboards or other decorative trimming instead. It is highly important to have your home checked for termites by a professional to ensure there are no hidden surprises regardless of what treatments or building products have been used in the past.

MYTH #4 ‘Pest Bombs’ will Treat your Home for Bed Bugs.

It would be much easier if we could just go to the local hardware store to get the best products to fix all your bug problems but unfortunately studies show that bombs can make the problem worse by spreading the pests out. They also don’t last long enough to kill off the different life stages of Bed Bugs. The most effective solution is to have a professional implement an ongoing treatment plan to ensure that all the bugs are eliminated and don’t repopulate your home.

MYTH #5 Mice are Attracted to Cheese.

I think we all know where this myth came from, the old Tom and Jerry cartoons. In the real world however with common practice we find that mice are more attracted to sugary sweets, cereals, cookies and peanut butter.
