As autumn is in full swing bringing the vibrant hues of colours around Dubbo and surrounding areas and the colder days with crisp evenings prompt us to exchange the singlets for jumpers. This transition is also the important time to prepare your properties for the increase in winter pests, which will want to join you inside to seek the warmer surroundings with you.

Don’t let these uninvited guests such as spiders, cockroaches and rodents from turning your home into their new cozy winter refuge.
Rodents
One of the most common winter pests found in rural NSW is the humble rodent. Rats and Mice are always on the lookout for different food sources and housing. When it is too cold for them to find these needs outside, they will actively seek them out with-in your walls.
It is important to check your house for any potential entry points. Check around gaps, pipework, any cracks in your foundations or openings around windows and doors. You should seal any possible entry points with steel wool, caulk or wire mesh to help prevent any pests from entering into the building.
Spiders

Spiders are also another type of pest that are known for seeking indoor shelter as it gets colder outside. Although these pests are great in controlling other insects during the warmer months, they are not nice to find setting up home inside once it gets cooler. If you noticed more cob webs around the corners of the house and in unused areas it might be a good idea to do regular vacuuming and wiping of these areas to remove any existing spiders and their egg sacs. Reducing outdoor lighting will also limit the number of insects that spiders feed off from being drawn around the exterior of your home.
Cockroaches
Some people also find that cockroaches can become a nuisance indoors wanting the warmer humid areas. Ensure that you always keep your kitchen clean and all food scraps are disposed of and no water sources are left out. If you noticed any cracks or crevices in your kitchen and bathrooms areas, you should have them sealed to prevent potential hiding places.
Another pest to keep an eye out for is any wood boring insects before winter sets in. Make sure you always check fire wood before bringing it into the house. Store it away from the main building and not in direct contact with the ground.
By taking the necessary steps as autumn sets in you can significantly reduce any pest infestations around your property during the upcoming colder months. Remember to seal entry points, keep all surfaces clean and never give pests a possible place to hide and you can make your home less inviting for any pests seeking winter sanctuary in your home.
Enjoy the beauty of autumn in the country, pest-free!
